It does pack quite a punch, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1300999.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10448\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1300999.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1300999.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1300999-260x300.png 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask does not have the usual openings for vision, instead the dancer looks out through the large open mouth.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310001.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10449\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310001.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310001.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310001-234x300.png 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At some point, probably long after the mask was carved, the dancer acquired a supply of thumb tacks, which have been applied to the eyes of the mask and the snakes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310021.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10453\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310021.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310021.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310021-300x243.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are additional snakes heads poking out of the back edge of the mask. In the top view that follows, their stubs can be seen. I speculate that these snakes formed open loops that circled towards the front of the mask, but these were easily broken\u00a0 or they were displaced by a new set of horns?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310018.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10452\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310018.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310018.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310018-300x217.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The view through the open mouth is certainly more than adequate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310012.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10450\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310012.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"819\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310012.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310012-220x300.png 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 12 inches tall, 10 inches wide, and 10\u00bd inches deep, excluding the horns. With the horns it is 16 inches tall and 12 inches wide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310013.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10451\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310013.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"689\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310013.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310013-261x300.png 261w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the back one sees again the stubs of apparent snake heads. The staining from long use is evident as well. This mask was worn on the dancer&#8217;s brow.<\/p>\n<p>The second mask, which was collected in Tamazula, in the Municipio of Abasolo, Guanajuato, was obtained from Robin and Barbara Cleaver in 1993. It does have the usual vision slits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310027.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10454\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310027.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310027.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310027-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two snakes cross over the muzzle and two more present at the corners of the mouth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310046.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10457\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310046.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"654\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310046.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310046-275x300.png 275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is another very handsome mask. Probably it has a bull&#8217;s face. Note the sagging chin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310037.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10455\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310037.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310037.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310037-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We are meant to perceive these horns as bloody from use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310042.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10456\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310042.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310042.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310042-300x269.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 12\u00bd inches tall, 7 inches wide, and 5\u00bd\u00a0 inches deep, not counting the horns. With the horns it is 16 inches tall and 15 inches wide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310048.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10458\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310048.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310048.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310048-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is not only stained from use, but it is also worn very smooth. At the time of collection, probably in the 1970s or 1980s, the mask was said to have been 50 years old, as if it dates to the 1930s or 40s, and this information was written on the back.<\/p>\n<p>The last two masks in today&#8217;s post were purchased together, along with another from Michoac\u00e1n that you have seen in an earlier post, all from the Cavin Morris Gallery, in December of 1995. This one came only with the information that it was found in the state of Guanajuato. I have long admired the colorful paint on this mask. There are four snakes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310070.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10467\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310070.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310070.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310070-300x248.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These are goat&#8217;s horns. In this region cow and goat horns are both popular on Pastorela Diablo masks. With them it is 14 inches tall and there is 20 inches between the horn tips.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310089.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10471\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310089.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310089.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/P1310089-300x216.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is stained from heavy use.<\/p>\n<p>This is the other mask purchased from the Cavin Morris Gallery in 1995.
