I was pleasantly surprised to find one Juanegro mask that did seem traditional and authentic. It looks to be by the same hand as a number of Juanegros from Tantoyuca or Tepecintca, Veracruz in my collection that were originally collected there by Jaled Muyaes and Estela Ogaz\u00f3n, probably in the 1970s. Here is the recent arrival.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330579.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12577\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330579.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330579.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330579-231x300.png 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask of Juanegro, the African foreman who challenges the Caucasian Hacienda Owner for the hand of a female of the household, is only slightly different in design details from several other Juanegros masks in my collection.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330581.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12578\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330581.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330581.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330581-222x300.png 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask has probably been repainted, and carelessly at that.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330587.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12579\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330587.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330587.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330587-255x300.png 255w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 6\u00be inches tall, 5\u00bd inches wide, and 3 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330590.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12580\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330590.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330590.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330590-247x300.png 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was the design and the obvious age of the back that caught my attention. The back looks very similar to some others that follow.<\/p>\n<p>For comparison, two masks from Tepetcintla that I purchased from Robin and Barbara Cleaver in 1987 are shown to the right of the new arrival. They appeared in my post of September 21, 2015.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330576.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12576\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330576.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/P1330576-300x142.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first represents Pa\u00f1ol, the Spanish Hacienda owner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/P1160867.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4523\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/P1160867.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"729\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The red paint on this mask is extremely worn, simply from being handled in the course of annual use during Todos Santos (All Saints Day, celebrated around November 1 each year).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/P1160870.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4494\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/P1160870.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"818\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 6\u00bd inches tall, 5\u00bd inches wide, and 2\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/P1160873.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4495\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/P1160873.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"692\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back of this mask exhibits extreme darkening from age.<\/p>\n<p>Here is another Juanegro.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/P1160875.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4496\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/P1160875.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"764\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>His face is identical to that of Pa\u00f1ol, except of course for the the color of the face.
