In Jim Griffith&#8217;s Masters Thesis of 1967 he showed a photograph taken in 1965 of a Pascola mask by Br\u00edgado Valenzuela (809-34, figure 15); &#8220;This was his first attempt at mask making,&#8221; said Griffith, but he didn&#8217;t indicate its age. Here is a link to a photo of that mask on the Arizona State Museum Website.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.statemuseum.arizona.edu\/exhibits_events\/browse-online-objects\/pascola-mask-2005-809-34\/page\/3\/view_as\/grid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.statemuseum.arizona.edu\/exhibits_events\/browse-online-objects\/pascola-mask-2005-809-34\/page\/3\/view_as\/grid<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In June, 1988 I purchased an anonymous Pascola Mask from Robin and Barbara Cleaver. When I compared it to another in a friend&#8217;s collection, I learned the name of the carver\u2014Br\u00edgido Valenzuela. I liked this mask a lot, but I gave it up in a trade for another important mask. Here is an old (and harshly lit) flash photo of that mask.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1340676.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13438\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1340676.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1340676.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1340676-216x300.png 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For comparison, here is a photo of a near duplicate from my friend&#8217;s collection. I photographed this mask, and one that comes later, in 2011, when they had moved to the collection of Jerry Collings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070045.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13414\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070045.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"957\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070045.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070045-188x300.png 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is an example of a design that Br\u00edgido used for a number of essentially duplicate masks. I have seen at least four like this, with the upper half of the face painted white and the lower part black.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070047.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13415\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070047.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070047.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070047-254x300.png 254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rim design is very simple, but creates the impression of a star, so that the mask seems to portray a planetary being.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070050.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13416\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070050.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"725\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070050.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070050-248x300.png 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The forehead cross on Br\u00edgido&#8217;s masks always looks like this one\u2014a Maltese cross design that is recessed, carved into the wood.<\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00bd inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 2\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070052.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13417\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070052.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"744\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070052.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/P1070052-242x300.png 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask has a heavily stained back. The mouth is highly characteristic of this carver, with carved lines delineating the teeth that are visible on the front and the back. Both the mask that was traded away and the mask identified as Br\u00edgido&#8217;s first also had these teeth showing through to the back.<\/p>\n<p>I purchased the next mask just several months after my first encounter with this carver&#8217;s masks, in November 1988. The two seemed like a pair to me, and were so obviously by the same hand.
