She had recently purchased the mask in Navojoa, Sonora. It came without the name of the carver, nor do I recognize this hand. In contrast to the made-for-sale masks that we had examined last week, this one is nicely carved <em>and<\/em> heavily danced.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340879.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13811\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340879.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340879.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340879-163x300.png 163w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340879-557x1024.png 557w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The extended tongue on this mask was carved from a separate piece of wood and fastened in place between the teeth.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340894.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13816\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340894.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"803\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340894.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340894-224x300.png 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The nicely carved almond shaped eyes have been given an exotic shape by careful repainting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340893.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13815\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340893.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340893.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340893-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The nose has a graceful profile that reminds one of several other carvers such as Pancho Parra and Sylvestre Lopez.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340882.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13812\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340882.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340882.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1340882-247x300.png 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This painted decoration is probably not identical to the original paint. The forehead cross presently has a strange shape. The jewels on the forehead may also be later additions.
