Of these, the first is traditional in design, and has been heavily danced, the three that follow are experimental in their use of colors and were mildly danced, and the fifth is a copy of a much older mask. Only the last of the five still has its hair; insects ate the hair on the other four.<\/p>\n<p>I really like the first of these, because it has such a jolly appearance. It was made in 1984, heavily danced, and collected in the late 1980s by Roberto Ruiz.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260559.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13986\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260559.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"818\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260559.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260559-220x300.png 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rim design of dotted triangles is familiar to us by now.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260560.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13987\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260560.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260560.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260560-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Likewise we are not surprised to see a recessed forehead cross, but this one has inlaid triangles of mirror glass.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260562.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13988\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260562.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260562.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260562-216x300.png 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a rim design, but is in not continuous.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260565.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13989\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260565.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260565.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260565-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is, of course, no chin cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260566.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13990\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260566.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260566.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260566-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is stained from long use.<\/p>\n<p>The second mask came with little information. It would seem traditional in appearance if not for the bright yellow paint.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260972.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13996\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260972.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260972.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260972-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lips, mouth, and tongue are very well carved, and consistent with Francisco&#8217;s style<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260975.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13997\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260975.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260975.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260975-219x300.png 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a very traditional rim design. We find inlaid rhinestones over the eyes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260977.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13998\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260977.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260977.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260977-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The forehead cross was painted freehand, without any inscribed outline.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1260978.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13999\" (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Again, we see only the mildest staining from use.<\/p>\n<p>The third mask is a variation on the first two. and also comes with no data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270161.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14004\" (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is yet another mask that would seem entirely traditional except for one of the paint colors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270163.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14005\" (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The forehead cross and the rim design hold no surprises.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270165.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14006\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270165.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270165.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270165-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The carving of these masks is so consistent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270170.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14007\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270170.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270170.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1270170-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is very mild staining from use.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth was collected in December, 1986.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1250854.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13973\" (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Francisco carved this nose in a different shape than usual.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1250858.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13974\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1250858.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1250858.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1250858-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We saw a similar lizard on the cheek of one of masks in last week&#8217;s post.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1250862.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13977\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1250862.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1250862.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1250862-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We see mild staining from use, particularly on the back of the forehead.<\/p>\n<p>The last mask in today&#8217;s post does look much different from the others, and it has a more interesting history. Francisco copied the design from a mask made in about 1940,\u00a0 and he won a prize for using only natural materials for the pigments. This mask was collected in March, 2007.
