By that time Pablo was deceased. The mask had been made circa 1980. The initial owner, Concepci\u00f3n Ontiveros, had been given this mask by a relative as a gift. He was a teacher by day, and a Pascola during fiestas. Although he was the usual wearer of the mask, he also taught his pupils to dance as Pascolas, and he allowed them to wear it sometimes, when they were dancing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360048.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14758\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360048.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360048.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360048-194x300.png 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask has the long hair that is favored by Sinaloa Pascola dancers. It has wonderful patina.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360050.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14759\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360050.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"848\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360050.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360050-212x300.png 212w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask has an unusual forehead cross. One commonly finds such elaborate crosses on Pablo&#8217;s masks<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360055.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14760\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360055.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360055.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360055-208x300.png 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are carved notches along the bottom edge of the openings for vision. His more recent masks had painted lower lashes rather than ones that were carved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360056.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14761\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360056.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"622\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360056.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360056-289x300.png 289w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The carved rim design extends around the upper part of the mask, but goes no lower than the eyes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360061.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14762\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360061.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"813\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360061.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360061-221x300.png 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8 inches tall, 5\u00bc inches wide, and 3 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360063.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14763\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360063.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"737\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360063.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360063-244x300.png 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is darkly stained from use, more so than you would think from this photo.<\/p>\n<p>The next mask was carved and danced by Pablo in 1988, then collected by Tom Kolaz\u00a0 later that year. On the back it is also marked February, 1989, as if it was collected then.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360094.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14769\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360094.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360094.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360094-153x300.png 153w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360094-522x1024.png 522w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is small, as if a child&#8217;s mask. The round vision openings are unusual for Pablo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360096.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14770\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360096.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360096.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360096-209x300.png 209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The simplicity of design of this mask is common for Pablo&#8217;s later masks. Barney Burns and Mahina Drees collected many masks like this in a variety of colors and color combinations, but all shaped like this one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360100.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14771\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360100.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360100.png 600w, https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/P1360100-247x300.png 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The cross is very unadorned on this mask.
