I bought it from Ren\u00e9 Bustamante in 1993.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140472.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2642\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140472.png\" alt=\"P1140472\" width=\"600\" height=\"891\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I particularly like the hollow eye sockets.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140475.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2643\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140475.png\" alt=\"P1140475\" width=\"600\" height=\"914\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 10\u00bd inches tall, 6\u00be inches wide, and 4 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140477.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2644\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140477.png\" alt=\"P1140477\" width=\"600\" height=\"916\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is good evidence of wear.<\/p>\n<p>The second skull mask is unusual because it has a headdress and tassles like those seen in codex drawings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140463.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2639\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140463.png\" alt=\"P1140463\" width=\"600\" height=\"786\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 11 inches tall, 8\u00bd inches wide, and 5\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140467.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2640\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140467.png\" alt=\"P1140467\" width=\"600\" height=\"833\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask would seem to be by the same hand as the first one. It was found in Tanlajas, SLP, by Jaled Muyaes and Estela Ogazon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140469.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2641\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140469.png\" alt=\"P1140469\" width=\"600\" height=\"765\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It has evidence of moderate use.<\/p>\n<p>The third skull is from the collection of my late friend, Gary Collison. It came without provenance, but seems typical of Fariseo masks\u00a0 from SLP. It looks quite sinister.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140444.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2636\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140444.png\" alt=\"P1140444\" width=\"600\" height=\"894\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask seems to be by a different hand than the first two.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140449.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2637\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140449.png\" alt=\"P1140449\" width=\"600\" height=\"928\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is 11 inches tall, 7\u00bd inches wide, and 4\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140451.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2638\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140451.png\" alt=\"P1140451\" width=\"600\" height=\"874\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because the back has been painted, it is difficult to estimate the degree of use for this mask, but it certainly seems to have been used.<\/p>\n<p>The last mask was collected by Dinah Gaston in Tanlajas, San Luis Potos\u00ed. It appears to portray the skull of a monkey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140480.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2645\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140480.png\" alt=\"P1140480\" width=\"600\" height=\"985\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are marks that suggest wounds, a characteristic that will be seen again in human faced Fariseo masks from this region.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140485.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2646\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140485.png\" alt=\"P1140485\" width=\"600\" height=\"802\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8\u00bd inches tall, 7 inches wide, and 4 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140486.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2647\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140486.png\" alt=\"P1140486\" width=\"600\" height=\"758\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140490.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2648\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1140490.png\" alt=\"P1140490\" width=\"600\" height=\"761\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This back shows moderate wear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Next week we will look at Fariseo masks from San Luis Potos\u00ed that have human faces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this week&#8217;s post I will focus on Skull masks that were worn by Fariseos during Semana Santa, in San Luis Potos\u00ed.
