Were it painted another color, I might think that it was a mask from the Juanegros dance. I bought this mask from Jaled Muyaes and Estela Ogaz\u00f3n in 1999.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170681.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5191\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170681.png\" alt=\"P1170681\" width=\"600\" height=\"942\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is an attractive mask that is simply carved. Neither the hairline, the mustache, or the goatee are carved in relief; they are simply painted.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170683.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5192\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170683.png\" alt=\"P1170683\" width=\"600\" height=\"1016\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 9\u00bcinches tall, 6 inches wide, and 3\u00bdinches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170687.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5193\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170687.png\" alt=\"P1170687\" width=\"600\" height=\"926\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back seems worn, but it has been scrubbed, so that it does not demonstrate the expected pattern of staining. The top edge was broken, long ago.<\/p>\n<p>While the last mask was long and thin, the next is unusually round. This mask also came from Jaled Muyaes and Estela Ogaz\u00f3n, in 1998.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170672.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5188\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170672.png\" alt=\"P1170672\" width=\"600\" height=\"745\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask makes the dancer appear to have a bloated or swollen face.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170675.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5189\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170675.png\" alt=\"P1170675\" width=\"600\" height=\"823\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 9\u00bc inches tall, 7\u00bd inches wide, and 2\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170678.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5190\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170678.png\" alt=\"P1170678\" width=\"600\" height=\"721\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is old and worn.<\/p>\n<p>The mouth of the next mask makes it look like the Xipe masks. I got this mask from Ren\u00e9 Bustamante in 1994. It was said to be from El Nante, Hidalgo, which would make it an Otom\u00ed mask, but it looks a lot like the Xipe Totec masks so I think that it started out somewhere else in Hidalgo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/P1170072.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4843\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/P1170072.png\" alt=\"P1170072\" width=\"600\" height=\"782\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is another mask that is simply carved but effective.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/P1170074.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4844\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/P1170074.png\" alt=\"P1170074\" width=\"600\" height=\"885\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8 inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 2\u00be inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/P1170078.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4845\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/P1170078.png\" alt=\"P1170078\" width=\"600\" height=\"733\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask has had only mild to moderate use.<\/p>\n<p>The next mask is painted a darker shade of red than usual and the eyes are painted in an interesting way. This is yet another Xantolo mask that I bought from Jaled Muyaes and Estela Ogaz\u00f3n in 1999.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170234.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5040\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170234.png\" alt=\"P1170234\" width=\"600\" height=\"810\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The numerous small teeth make this mask look particularly malevolent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170235.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5041\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170235.png\" alt=\"P1170235\" width=\"600\" height=\"864\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8\u00bd inches tall, 6\u00bc inches wide, and 3\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170240.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5042\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170240.png\" alt=\"P1170240\" width=\"600\" height=\"779\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is worn.<\/p>\n<p>I got this next mask from Jaled and Estela in 1997. It is from San Miguel, Veracruz.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170270.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5045\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170270.png\" alt=\"P1170270\" width=\"600\" height=\"858\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On this mask, the hair, the eyes, and the mustache are all carved in relief, then cigarette package foil has been applied to the eyes, mustache, and the corners of the mouth. The hairline is unusually ornate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170274.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5046\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170274.png\" alt=\"P1170274\" width=\"600\" height=\"922\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00be inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 3\u00bc inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170275.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5047\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170275.png\" alt=\"P1170275\" width=\"600\" height=\"749\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is dark from use and one corner has long been broken.<\/p>\n<p>The next red Xantolo mask is deceptively simple in appearance from the front, but look at its wonderful lines in profile, below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170300.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5055\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170300.png\" alt=\"P1170300\" width=\"600\" height=\"722\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask has such a beautiful nose. A patch of leather was nailed to the chin to create the appearance of a goatee.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170305.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5056\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170305.png\" alt=\"P1170305\" width=\"600\" height=\"655\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00bc inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 4\u00bc inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170307.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5057\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170307.png\" alt=\"P1170307\" width=\"600\" height=\"627\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back shows marked wear.<\/p>\n<p>I purchased the next Xantolo mask from Robin and Barbara Cleaver in 1994. It had originally been collected by Jaled Muyaes and Estela Ogaz\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170560.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5203\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170560.png\" alt=\"P1170560\" width=\"600\" height=\"786\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This Xantolo mask is unusual because it has artfully carved ears and the teeth are also finely carved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170563.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5204\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170563.png\" alt=\"P1170563\" width=\"600\" height=\"904\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8\u00be inches tall, 6\u00bd inches wide, and 3\u00bc inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170565.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5205\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170565.png\" alt=\"P1170565\" width=\"600\" height=\"770\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back reveals yet another old number from the 1981 show in Mexico City. The staining from use is obvious and remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>Once again I find myself saying that another mask is unusual. But there it is, these Xantolo masks are remarkable in their variety and strangeness. I got this one from Jaled and Estela in 1998 and it is really strange and wonderful. It is from Hidalgo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170616.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5125\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170616.png\" alt=\"P1170616\" width=\"600\" height=\"1039\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lips are unpainted. The mask has a high, slanted forehead.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170625.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5127\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170625.png\" alt=\"P1170625\" width=\"600\" height=\"1020\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The paint is unusual, in that the face is dark pink but there is white paint along the upper part of the nose. There are rudimentary relief-carved ears.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170620.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5126\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170620.png\" alt=\"P1170620\" width=\"600\" height=\"1030\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 10 inches tall, 5\u00bd inches wide, and 3\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170627.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5128\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170627.png\" alt=\"P1170627\" width=\"600\" height=\"977\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The staining\u00a0 on the back is in the the moderate range.<\/p>\n<p>I got this next mask from Jaled Muyaes and Estela Ogaz\u00f3n in 1999.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170689.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5194\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170689.png\" alt=\"P1170689\" width=\"600\" height=\"717\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is an usual mask because it depicts a man wearing a cap. The brim of the cap was carved from the same block of wood as the rest of the mask.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170691.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5195\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170691.png\" alt=\"P1170691\" width=\"600\" height=\"725\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 6\u00bd inches tall, 5\u00bc inches wide, and 3 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170696.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5196\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170696.png\" alt=\"P1170696\" width=\"600\" height=\"631\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back shows moderate wear. The handwritten pencil inscription on the back identifies this as a Chantolo (Xantolo), from Conteres, Municipio of San Cristobal, Veracruz.<\/p>\n<p>This last example is yet another that I obtained from Jaled and Estela, this one in 2000. It is from Humotitla, Hidalgo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170662.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5185\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170662.png\" alt=\"P1170662\" width=\"600\" height=\"831\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask could have been in the group I presented last week, since it has a green beard. It has scarification on the forehead like the Xipe style masks. The teeth were once painted silver.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170666.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5186\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170666.png\" alt=\"P1170666\" width=\"600\" height=\"920\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7 inches tall, 5 inches wide, and 2\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170668.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5187\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1170668.png\" alt=\"P1170668\" width=\"600\" height=\"727\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a broken area at the chin. The staining on the back is moderate.
