{"id":7386,"date":"2016-11-21T09:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-11-21T09:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/?p=7386"},"modified":"2016-11-21T01:48:46","modified_gmt":"2016-11-21T01:48:46","slug":"camilo-alvarez-buitimea-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/?p=7386","title":{"rendered":"Camilo \u00c1lvarez Buitimea 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This series of posts about Yoeme (Yaqui) Pascola masks began on July 4, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Last week we looked at three or four made for sale masks by Camilo \u00c1lvarez Buitimea, followed by dog and human faced masks by this carver that had been danced.<\/p>\n<p>Today we will examine some additional danced and made for sale examples, but with a difference\u2014the danced masks will prove to be as unusual as the made for sale masks. I &#8216;ll start with one of the made for sale masks, apparently depicting a skunk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090659.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7425\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090659.png\" alt=\"P1090659\" width=\"600\" height=\"1193\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The expression on this face, which projects anxiety or shyness, is achieved with such simplicity. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090662.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7426\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090662.png\" alt=\"P1090662\" width=\"600\" height=\"880\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note the flared rim on this mask.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090671.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7427\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090671.png\" alt=\"P1090671\" width=\"600\" height=\"739\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00bd inches tall, 5\u00bc inches wide, and 2\u00be inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090674.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7428\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090674.png\" alt=\"P1090674\" width=\"600\" height=\"807\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The very faint inscription on the back says &#8220;CAB, 5\/05.&#8221; We see the usual contour and no staining from use.<\/p>\n<p>The second made for sale mask portrays the face of a sea turtle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090556.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7405\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090556.png\" alt=\"P1090556\" width=\"600\" height=\"941\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We see the sea turtle&#8217;s biting jaws.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090562.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7406\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090562.png\" alt=\"P1090562\" width=\"600\" height=\"775\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The yellow and green colors somehow evoke an underwater effect.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090568.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7407\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090568.png\" alt=\"P1090568\" width=\"600\" height=\"692\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00bc inches tall, 5 inches wide, and 3 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090575.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7408\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1090575.png\" alt=\"P1090575\" width=\"600\" height=\"777\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The inscription on the back of this mask says &#8220;CAB, 12\/99.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, here are two danced masks from the collection of Barney Burns and Mahina Drees. The first is a brown bat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230889.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7444\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230889.png\" alt=\"P1230889\" width=\"600\" height=\"822\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One sees bat ears and little yellow teeth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230891.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7445\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230891.png\" alt=\"P1230891\" width=\"600\" height=\"781\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As usual for Camilo&#8217;s animal masks, there is no forehead cross, even on a danced example.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230894.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7446\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230894.png\" alt=\"P1230894\" width=\"600\" height=\"858\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One can see that Camilo loves bright colors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230896.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7447\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230896.png\" alt=\"P1230896\" width=\"600\" height=\"847\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230897.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7448\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230897.png\" alt=\"P1230897\" width=\"600\" height=\"831\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rim is stained in comparison to the lighter color of the unstained center of the back. It was said to have been danced for two years.<\/p>\n<p>The last in this series, another mask that was said to have been danced for one year, portrays a Tiger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230952.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7449\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230952.png\" alt=\"P1230952\" width=\"600\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask also has yellow teeth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230954.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7450\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/P1230954.png\" alt=\"P1230954\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tigre is the Mexican word for Jaguar. Is this a Tiger or a Jaguar?
