Although his name appears on a number of masks, none of the labels indicate where he lives. I am guessing that he lives in Potam, Sonora. I have just one human faced mask to show you, along with a goat, four dogs, and two birds.<\/p>\n<p>This human faced mask was collected\u00a0 by Barney Burns\u00a0 and Mahina Drees Burns after 7 years of use by the carver.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190034.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8973\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190034.png\" alt=\"P1190034\" width=\"600\" height=\"1194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Note the abstract designs on the cheeks, a common marker for this carver. The rim design on this mask is interesting, with its double bands at the temples and then double peaks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190038.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8974\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190038.png\" alt=\"P1190038\" width=\"600\" height=\"745\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although this cross resembles those of Alejandro Reyes Alegria, of Potam, it has a slightly different design. This will be more obvious on some of the masks that follow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190040.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8975\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190040.png\" alt=\"P1190040\" width=\"600\" height=\"755\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mouth and tongue on this mask remind one of the work of many other Potam carvers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190042.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8976\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190042.png\" alt=\"P1190042\" width=\"600\" height=\"878\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This angle provides a particularly clear view of the designs on the cheeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190044.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8977\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190044.png\" alt=\"P1190044\" width=\"600\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The staining on the back indicates significant use. You will see, comparing this mask to those that follow, that his backs all look very similar to one another in shape and design.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a bird faced mask with similar designs on the cheeks. This mask too was said to have been danced by the carver for 7 years. In fact, all of today&#8217;s masks were accompanied by that history, suggesting that Soterito used them in rotation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180899.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8968\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180899.png\" alt=\"P1180899\" width=\"600\" height=\"874\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maybe this mask is meant to represent a chicken?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180903.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8969\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180903.png\" alt=\"P1180903\" width=\"600\" height=\"856\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a tongue inside the beaked mouth. This mask has a different abstract design on the cheeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180906.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8970\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180906.png\" alt=\"P1180906\" width=\"600\" height=\"954\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These bird masks lack forehead crosses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180910.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8971\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180910.png\" alt=\"P1180910\" width=\"600\" height=\"870\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nor do they have chin crosses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180912.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8972\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1180912.png\" alt=\"P1180912\" width=\"600\" height=\"888\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All of these masks seem to demonstrate the same degree of use.<\/p>\n<p>Here is another mask by Sotorito with a bird face.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190927.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8978\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190927.png\" alt=\"P1190927\" width=\"600\" height=\"1198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This one lacks a comb. The rim design on this mask reminds one of variations that I associate with the Rodr\u00edguez carvers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190930.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8979\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190930.png\" alt=\"P1190930\" width=\"600\" height=\"777\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here s the cheek design on this mask.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190933.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8980\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190933.png\" alt=\"P1190933\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From above one sees this Rodr\u00edguez style rim design, as well as the absence of a forehead cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190936.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8981\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190936.png\" alt=\"P1190936\" width=\"600\" height=\"874\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190938.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8982\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190938.png\" alt=\"P1190938\" width=\"600\" height=\"825\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And again, there is no chin cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190941.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8983\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1190941.png\" alt=\"P1190941\" width=\"600\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We see this carver&#8217;s usual back. The strap was cut from a recycled inner tube.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the first of four dog faced masks by Soterito from the Burns collection (B&amp;M 195). You will see that they are very uniform in style and that they resemble canine masks by the Rodr\u00edguez carvers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200288.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8984\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200288.png\" alt=\"P1200288\" width=\"600\" height=\"827\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The abstract cheek designs have been replaced by long flowing triangles which resemble those of Preciliano Rodriguez Cupis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200290.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8985\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200290.png\" alt=\"P1200290\" width=\"600\" height=\"811\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The integrated design of the forehead with the two ears will prove to be consistent across all four of Sotrito&#8217;s canine masks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200294.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8986\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200294.png\" alt=\"P1200294\" width=\"600\" height=\"844\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The cross on this mask is a better example of Soterito&#8217;s cross design.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200297.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8987\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200297.png\" alt=\"P1200297\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apparently Soterito seldom includes a chin cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200300.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8988\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200300.png\" alt=\"P1200300\" width=\"600\" height=\"765\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a danced mask.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u00a0 is a second example of Soterito&#8217;s canine masks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200341.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8989\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200341.png\" alt=\"P1200341\" width=\"600\" height=\"1268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It much resembles the first.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200346.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8990\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200346.png\" alt=\"P1200346\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200350.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8991\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200350.png\" alt=\"P1200350\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200353.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8992\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200353.png\" alt=\"P1200353\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200355.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8993\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200355.png\" alt=\"P1200355\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Soterito used a consistent back design. This one has mild staining from use.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a third canine mask in the same style (Barney &amp; Mahina 207).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200529.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8999\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200529.png\" alt=\"P1200529\" width=\"600\" height=\"1155\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The details are the same.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200531.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9000\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200531.png\" alt=\"P1200531\" width=\"600\" height=\"949\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200533.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9001\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200533.png\" alt=\"P1200533\" width=\"600\" height=\"820\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200536.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9002\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200536.png\" alt=\"P1200536\" width=\"600\" height=\"783\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I neglected to take a back view for this one.<\/p>\n<p>And here is a fourth canine mask with essentially the same design (Barney and Mahina 215).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200687.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9003\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200687.png\" alt=\"P1200687\" width=\"600\" height=\"784\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200691.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9004\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200691.png\" alt=\"P1200691\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The forehead cross is slightly different than the others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200693.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9005\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200693.png\" alt=\"P1200693\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200695.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9006\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200695.png\" alt=\"P1200695\" width=\"600\" height=\"755\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200698.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9007\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200698.png\" alt=\"P1200698\" width=\"600\" height=\"775\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The backs of these four canine masks do all look the same. I found at least one more of these dogs in the Burns collection, and it too had this back design (B&amp;M 481\/474).<\/p>\n<p>Last but not least, a goat faced mask with relief carved horns (B&amp;M 201).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200404_2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8994\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200404_2.png\" alt=\"P1200404_2\" width=\"600\" height=\"1202\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The design is simple but effective.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200407.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8995\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200407.png\" alt=\"P1200407\" width=\"600\" height=\"814\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The horns are carved in relief.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200410.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8996\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200410.png\" alt=\"P1200410\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As usual for this carver, there is a forehead cross but no chin cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200414.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8997\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200414.png\" alt=\"P1200414\" width=\"600\" height=\"829\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200415.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8998\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1200415.png\" alt=\"P1200415\" width=\"600\" height=\"763\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is Soterito&#8217;s almond shaped back again, although it looks different without the canine ears at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Next week I will introduce you to another Yaqui carver, Ruben Hern\u00e1ndez, from Vicam Sonora.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Soterito Matus is another Yoeme carver whom I discovered during my photographic documentation of the Barney and Mahina Burns mask collection.
