Today I will conclude my discussion of this carver with four additional masks that have the faces of goats or rams, and then three changos (monkeys and apes).<\/p>\n<p>I purchased my first Pascola mask by Frank from Lupe Sinoui, the director of the Old Pascua Community Center, in 1989.\u00a0 I chose it from a group of masks that Frank had probably made in that year or the one before. Later I traded it to David West, the owner of Gallery West in Tucson. Here are photos of this Goat faced mask that I took when it was still in my collection. Isn&#8217;t it handsome?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050933.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9185\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050933.png\" alt=\"P1050933\" width=\"600\" height=\"1211\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050937.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9186\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050937.png\" alt=\"P1050937\" width=\"600\" height=\"786\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask has good vision openings and attractive painted details.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050940.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9187\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050940.png\" alt=\"P1050940\" width=\"600\" height=\"782\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are crosses on the forehead and chin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050942.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9188\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050942.png\" alt=\"P1050942\" width=\"600\" height=\"741\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050944.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9189\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050944.png\" alt=\"P1050944\" width=\"600\" height=\"788\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is well carved and there is no staining from use.<\/p>\n<p>This equally wonderful Goat Pascola mask by Frank Mart\u00ednez was collected by Barney and Mahina Burns (B&amp;M# 351\/344); it dates to around 1994.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9225\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994.png\" alt=\"26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994\" width=\"600\" height=\"1368\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is very nicely painted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994-side.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9224\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994-side.png\" alt=\"26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994-side\" width=\"600\" height=\"833\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are painted flowers flanking the forehead cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994-brow.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9222\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994-brow.png\" alt=\"26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994-brow\" width=\"600\" height=\"804\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This one one of Frank&#8217;s masks that has those tiny openings for vision.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-frank-chico-martinez1994-chin.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9223\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-frank-chico-martinez1994-chin.png\" alt=\"26-frank-chico-martinez1994-chin\" width=\"600\" height=\"747\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a tiny cross tucked under the chin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994-back.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9221\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994-back.png\" alt=\"26-Frank-Chico-Martinez1994-back\" width=\"600\" height=\"810\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask may have been mildly danced, but certainly not much.<\/p>\n<p>I purchased this third Goat mask on Ebay, several years ago. It was said to have been carved by Frank Mart\u00ednez in 1986.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080899.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9205\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080899.png\" alt=\"P1080899\" width=\"600\" height=\"938\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I particularly like the white painted decorations on the face of this mask.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080912.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9207\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080912.png\" alt=\"P1080912\" width=\"600\" height=\"994\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also like the everted upper lip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080904.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9206\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080904.png\" alt=\"P1080904\" width=\"600\" height=\"914\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are crosses on the forehead and chin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080915.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9208\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080915.png\" alt=\"P1080915\" width=\"600\" height=\"747\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8\u00bd&#8221; tall,\u00a0 5\u00bd&#8221; wide, and 3\u00bc&#8221; deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080919.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9209\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1080919.png\" alt=\"P1080919\" width=\"600\" height=\"801\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is no evidence of use.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth Goat Pascola mask has curling ram&#8217;s horns. It was collected undanced by Tom Kolaz in 1983. I photographed it with the permission of Jerry Collings in 2012, when it was in his collection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9238\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983.png\" alt=\"29-frank-chico-martinez1983\" width=\"600\" height=\"954\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because of the striking combination of colors, I usually don&#8217;t perceive this as a goat mask. Instead it always makes me think of a Chango (monkey).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Side.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9237\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Side.png\" alt=\"29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Side\" width=\"600\" height=\"803\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The silver paint is particularly unusual.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Brow.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9235\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Brow.png\" alt=\"29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Brow\" width=\"600\" height=\"621\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Chin.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9236\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Chin.png\" alt=\"29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Chin\" width=\"600\" height=\"818\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Back.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9234\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Back.png\" alt=\"29-frank-chico-martinez1983-Back\" width=\"600\" height=\"736\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The reason that so many of Frank&#8217;s masks were never danced is not because they weren&#8217;t suitable, but because Frank liked to sell a mask as soon as it was finished, and this led him to sell to repeat customers such as Lupe Sinoui, Martha Secan, Tom Kolaz, or other Tucson collectors or dealers.<\/p>\n<p>Now I will finish with three Chango or monkey\/ape masks. As I recall, I bought this one from Martha Secan of Tucson in about 1995. I later traded it to David West, of Gallery West in Tucson, Arizona.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050903.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9178\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050903.png\" alt=\"P1050903\" width=\"600\" height=\"742\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is another one of Frank&#8217;s masks with wonderful paint.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050894.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9176\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050894.png\" alt=\"P1050894\" width=\"600\" height=\"783\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is an attractive forehead cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050898.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9177\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050898.png\" alt=\"P1050898\" width=\"600\" height=\"710\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you may have noticed, Frank often added an inner rim design, particularly around the chin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050893.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9175\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050893.png\" alt=\"P1050893\" width=\"600\" height=\"1233\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have a photo of the back.<\/p>\n<p>I purchased this Chango mask from Martha Secan in 1996.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050965.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9190\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050965.png\" alt=\"P1050965\" width=\"600\" height=\"1053\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I particularly like the painted ears.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050971.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9191\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050971.png\" alt=\"P1050971\" width=\"600\" height=\"740\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The half circle framing the cross is so attractive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050973.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9192\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050973.png\" alt=\"P1050973\" width=\"600\" height=\"754\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By now you must have noticed that Frank wants his masks to have both a forehead and a chin cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050976.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9193\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050976.png\" alt=\"P1050976\" width=\"600\" height=\"795\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7&#8243; tall,\u00a0 5\u00bd&#8221; wide, and 2\u00be&#8221; deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050978.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9194\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1050978.png\" alt=\"P1050978\" width=\"600\" height=\"754\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is no staining from use.<\/p>\n<p>When I bought this mask in 1998 from a Tucson dealer, Tom Kolaz commented that Frank had recently switched over to this painting style, which was quite different from his earlier one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1110179.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9195\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1110179.png\" alt=\"P1110179\" width=\"600\" height=\"731\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From a sculptural perspective, this is a great mask.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1060001.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9196\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1060001.png\" alt=\"P1060001\" width=\"600\" height=\"779\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask lacks a chin cross but there are two crosses on the cheeks that match the one on the forehead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1060007.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9197\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1060007.png\" alt=\"P1060007\" width=\"600\" height=\"790\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is another example of a mask with a widely open mouth, but no opening to the interior of the mask, apparently because it was not expected to be used by a dancer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1060008.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9198\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/P1060008.png\" alt=\"P1060008\" width=\"600\" height=\"710\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00bd&#8221;
