Since then I have bought six more. These clowns will be the focus of today&#8217;s post. Here is the one from 2006. Isn&#8217;t this a wonderful mask!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100258.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9527\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100258.png\" alt=\"P1100258\" width=\"600\" height=\"996\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The triangles under the eyes, which the Yaquis often refer to as &#8220;tears,&#8221; have been replaced by tiny inverted triangles that do mimic weeping. The vision openings are nearly invisible slits under the painted eyes, a design detail that we saw on another mask by Crisencio in last week&#8217;s post.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100261.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9528\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100261.png\" alt=\"P1100261\" width=\"600\" height=\"825\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The nose and mouth on this mask are small masterpieces. In contrast to the weeping eyes, the remarkable exaggeration of the curled corners of the mouth suggests the opposite emotion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100262.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9529\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100262.png\" alt=\"P1100262\" width=\"600\" height=\"752\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The design that replaces the usual forehead cross resembles a flower. On the chin, a black diamond\u00a0 echoes the color of the eyes and tears, reinforcing the suggestion of warring emotions\u2014&#8221;The tears of a clown&#8221; (Smoky Robinson, 1967).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100265.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9530\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100265.png\" alt=\"P1100265\" width=\"600\" height=\"748\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00bd inches tall, 5 inches wide, and 3 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100267.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9531\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100267.png\" alt=\"P1100267\" width=\"600\" height=\"737\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The name on the back marks this as one of the masks from the Morning Star Trader gallery.<\/p>\n<p>My next clown mask, which was purchased from Crisencio a year or so later, is much more modest and conventional.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300077.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9557\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300077.png\" alt=\"P1300077\" width=\"600\" height=\"1192\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is about the right size for an adolescent dancer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300079.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9558\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300079.png\" alt=\"P1300079\" width=\"600\" height=\"684\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note the crescent design, in pink and red, that frames the eye.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300082.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9559\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300082.png\" alt=\"P1300082\" width=\"600\" height=\"689\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a conventional forehead cross, while the chin is bare.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300083.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9560\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300083.png\" alt=\"P1300083\" width=\"600\" height=\"733\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00be inches tall, 4\u00be inches wide, and 2\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300087.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9561\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300087.png\" alt=\"P1300087\" width=\"600\" height=\"864\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is unstained, and unsigned.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Kolaz purchased the third mask from the carver, on 11\/3\/2007, after it had been danced at &#8220;39th Street&#8221; (Barrio Libre) in Tucson.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300057.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9552\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300057.png\" alt=\"P1300057\" width=\"600\" height=\"1118\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These boomerang shaped tears combine many contrasting colors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300063.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9553\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300063.png\" alt=\"P1300063\" width=\"600\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The forehead and chin crosses are magenta.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300065.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9554\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300065.png\" alt=\"P1300065\" width=\"600\" height=\"698\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300070.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9555\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300070.png\" alt=\"P1300070\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8\u00bc inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 3 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300073.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9556\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300073.png\" alt=\"P1300073\" width=\"600\" height=\"715\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is only lightly stained at the forehead and chin, from use.<\/p>\n<p>This fourth Payaso was collected from the carver in about 2008.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100296.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9542\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100296.png\" alt=\"P1100296\" width=\"600\" height=\"1534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is studded with sequins and plastic ornaments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100300.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9543\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100300.png\" alt=\"P1100300\" width=\"600\" height=\"811\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The colors on this mask are festive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100301.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9544\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100301.png\" alt=\"P1100301\" width=\"600\" height=\"729\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Counting the forehead cross, there are seven stars or planets. This is a clown of light, a figure who brings the night sky to those living on earth. Describing the mask in this way reminds me of the Yaquis&#8217; parallel worlds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100306.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9545\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100306.png\" alt=\"P1100306\" width=\"600\" height=\"741\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8\u00be inches tall, 6\u00bd inches wide, and 2\u00be inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100308.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9546\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100308.png\" alt=\"P1100308\" width=\"600\" height=\"774\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is unremarkable.<\/p>\n<p>The next clown Pascola mask was collected in about 2009.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100284.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9537\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100284.png\" alt=\"P1100284\" width=\"600\" height=\"1334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the big grin and the bright colors, this clown somehow manages to look malevolent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100291.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9540\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100291.png\" alt=\"P1100291\" width=\"600\" height=\"722\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are red spotted circles along with yellow ones.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100288.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9538\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100288.png\" alt=\"P1100288\" width=\"600\" height=\"628\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The four triangles around the eyes create the shape of Venus, the Morning Star.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100290.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9539\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100290.png\" alt=\"P1100290\" width=\"600\" height=\"806\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8 inches tall, 5\u00bd inches wide, and 4 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100293.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9541\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100293.png\" alt=\"P1100293\" width=\"600\" height=\"760\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back and the strap are unstained from use.<\/p>\n<p>This one was collected from the carver on September 8, 2010.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100268.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9532\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100268.png\" alt=\"P1100268\" width=\"600\" height=\"1063\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like the last, this one also has four triangles around the eyes. There are hexagons, constructed from triangles, on the cheeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100279.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9535\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100279.png\" alt=\"P1100279\" width=\"600\" height=\"668\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yellow designs dominate on the forehead\u2014triangles above the eyes, the forehead Morning star, and the scalloped rim design.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100271.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9533\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100271.png\" alt=\"P1100271\" width=\"600\" height=\"1048\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most beautiful of my clowns.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100275.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9534\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100275.png\" alt=\"P1100275\" width=\"600\" height=\"721\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 8 inches tall, 5\u00bc inches wide, and 3\u00bc inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100282.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9536\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100282.png\" alt=\"P1100282\" width=\"600\" height=\"680\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The carving of the back is typical of Crisencio&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p>The last of these Payasos was purchased from the carver in March, 2017.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300045.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9547\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300045.png\" alt=\"P1300045\" width=\"600\" height=\"1368\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This one looks more like a beautiful woman than all the rest, albeit a woman wearing a false nose.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300046.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9548\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300046.png\" alt=\"P1300046\" width=\"600\" height=\"740\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We see the pointed chin that we have previously encountered on other masks by Crisencio.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300050.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9549\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300050.png\" alt=\"P1300050\" width=\"600\" height=\"732\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This forehead cross is most unusual and beautiful, and it is particularly striking in combination with the colors of the rim design.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300054.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9550\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300054.png\" alt=\"P1300054\" width=\"600\" height=\"792\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is another of Crisencio&#8217;s masks with magnificent hair. There are 20 bundles across the brow, and 17 more around the chin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300055.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9551\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300055.png\" alt=\"P1300055\" width=\"600\" height=\"752\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What is difficult to see from this angle is that the chin juts down so far below the back. The mask is 8 inches tall, but measures just 7 inches from the top down to the inside edge of the chin.
