It is magnificent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100020.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9582\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100020.png\" alt=\"P1100020\" width=\"600\" height=\"1198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This mask has artfully shaped relief carved horns<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100033.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9586\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100033.png\" alt=\"P1100033\" width=\"600\" height=\"737\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is no forehead or chin cross. The triangles under the eyes were cut from recycled plastic CDs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100025.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9583\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100025.png\" alt=\"P1100025\" width=\"600\" height=\"698\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are painted ears.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100028.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9584\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100028.png\" alt=\"P1100028\" width=\"600\" height=\"695\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00bc inches tall, 5\u00bc inches wide, and 3 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100031.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9585\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100031.png\" alt=\"P1100031\" width=\"600\" height=\"709\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back, which shows no sign of use, was marked with Crisencio&#8217;s name, apparently by the Morning Star Traders gallery.<\/p>\n<p>The second Goat mask was purchased from Crisencio in 2009, undanced.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100035.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9587\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100035.png\" alt=\"P1100035\" width=\"600\" height=\"1515\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In contrast to the first, this one has a forehead cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100045.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9590\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100045.png\" alt=\"P1100045\" width=\"600\" height=\"772\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Crisencio&#8217;s masks are consistently well carved, and this one is no exception.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100039.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9588\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100039.png\" alt=\"P1100039\" width=\"600\" height=\"803\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inlaid plastic crescents flank the forehead cross and there are inlaid plastic stars on the cheeks. Also note the pleasing combination of white, black,and gray.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100041.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9589\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100041.png\" alt=\"P1100041\" width=\"600\" height=\"789\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is Crisencio&#8217;s standard hair treatment, which is generally superior to the hair on many other pascola masks. The mask is 7\u00be inches tall, 5 inches wide, and 2\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100048.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9591\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100048.png\" alt=\"P1100048\" width=\"600\" height=\"770\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Someone, perhaps Tom Kolaz, has written Crisencio&#8217;s initials on the back (CMM). This back appears to be stained from use, but I believe that this is an illusion caused by variation in the color of the wood (heart wood versus sap wood).<\/p>\n<p>The third Goat was purchased from Crisencio by Tom Kolaz in 2007.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100062.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9592\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100062.png\" alt=\"P1100062\" width=\"600\" height=\"1150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The majority of the facial area was not painted, but merely coated with some pigmented sealer, so that one sees the natural grain of the wood. This mask too has a forehead cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100071.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9594\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100071.png\" alt=\"P1100071\" width=\"600\" height=\"812\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most dramatic aspect of this mask is the oversized turned-up tongue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100069.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9593\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100069.png\" alt=\"P1100069\" width=\"600\" height=\"727\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00bd inches tall, 5 inches wide, and 3\u00be inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100076.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9595\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100076.png\" alt=\"P1100076\" width=\"600\" height=\"781\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back has been carefully carved and smoothed. There is no evidence of use.<\/p>\n<p>The next two masks were probably collected from Crisencio by Tom Kolaz in about 2010.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100527.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9596\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100527.png\" alt=\"P1100527\" width=\"600\" height=\"1354\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The areas of budding horns are carved in very low relief and highlighted by paint. These low buds appear to be a Cricensio invention, as I have never seen them on any other carver&#8217;s masks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100530.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9597\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1100530.png\" alt=\"P1100530\" width=\"600\" height=\"793\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These horn buds flank an elaborate forehead cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300101.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9603\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300101.png\" alt=\"P1300101\" width=\"600\" height=\"667\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask has the carefully carved recessed eyes that we have seen on some other masks by Crisencio, with open pupils for vision.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300104.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9604\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300104.png\" alt=\"P1300104\" width=\"600\" height=\"745\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 9 inches tall, 5\u00bd inches wide, and 5 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300107.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9605\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300107.png\" alt=\"P1300107\" width=\"600\" height=\"766\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is another of Crisencio&#8217;s masks that has this puzzling pattern of color variation in the wood that creates the false impression of staining from use.<\/p>\n<p>The last mask and the next are similar in their shapes and overall design, but dramatically different in size.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120108.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9601\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120108.png\" alt=\"P1120108\" width=\"600\" height=\"478\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is even more apparent from the side views.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120143.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9602\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120143.png\" alt=\"P1120143\" width=\"600\" height=\"503\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The smaller mask has a simple forehead cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120100.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9598\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120100.png\" alt=\"P1120100\" width=\"600\" height=\"1443\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the smaller mask actually has taller horn buds. This is a well carved mask with a sweet face.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120104.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9599\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120104.png\" alt=\"P1120104\" width=\"600\" height=\"865\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In contrast to the preceding mask, this one is 7\u00bd inches tall, 3\u00be inches wide, and 3\u00bd inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120105.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9600\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1120105.png\" alt=\"P1120105\" width=\"600\" height=\"781\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The backs of these goats are deeply carved.<\/p>\n<p>The last mask in this post depicts a ram or Mountain Sheep. Obviously it is very different from the other goat-faced masks. I have no record of when I got it. It is one of many from my joint project with Tom Kolaz to encourage and collect the work of this so talented carver.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300090.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9606\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300090.png\" alt=\"P1300090\" width=\"600\" height=\"1261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At first glance this mask has a spooky appearance, but then one notices the friendly playful smile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300091.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9607\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300091.png\" alt=\"P1300091\" width=\"600\" height=\"725\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The horns are carved in low relief.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300094.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9608\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300094.png\" alt=\"P1300094\" width=\"600\" height=\"672\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is particularly dramatic, painted only with black and white colors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300097.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9609\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300097.png\" alt=\"P1300097\" width=\"600\" height=\"774\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mask is 7\u00bc inches tall, 5\u00bc inches wide, and 3 inches deep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300100.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9610\" src=\"https:\/\/mexicandancemasks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/P1300100.png\" alt=\"P1300100\" width=\"600\" height=\"757\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back is shallow compared to those of the last two goats.<\/p>\n<p>Next week we will look at canine masks by Crisencio.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I bought my first Goat Pascola mask by Crisencio from the Morning Star Traders gallery (Tucson) in 2006.
